SUMMARY:September Meeting A.G.M. followed by Speaker Matt Bothwell“Monsters in the Dark details below
DESCRIPTION:For a long time\, our view of the night sky was missing something huge. Because we relied on the visible light our eyes can see\, we completely missed some of the biggest structures in the cosmos. Among the largest are submillimeter galaxies—early universe giants that form stars thousands of times faster than our Milky Way\, but are totally hidden behind thick blankets of cosmic dust.\n\nIn this talk\, Dr Matthew Bothwell shares the story of how astronomers tracked down these hidden giants. We will look at how moving beyond visible light—using infrared and submillimeter telescopes—allowed us to peer through the dust and change our understanding of how galaxies grow.\nDoors open 7.00pm for refreshments
